Samsung Blackjack tips and tricks

The business development team at Vertigo recently standardized on the Samsung Blackjack phone.

It's fantastic hardware. The smartphone has finally shrunk to a pocketable form factor after all these years. Ironically, it's the software that needs to improve -- the Windows Mobile 5.0 OS on the phone leaves a lot to be desired. It's not exactly intuitive.

I dug through a massive tips and tricks thread trying to figure out ways to work efficiently in Windows Mobile on the Blackjack. Here's a summary of the best:

  • Hard reset the phone by holding down UP and POWER to boot. It will ask to confirm.
  • You can adjust the brightness of the screen in Settings under Power (scroll down)
  • Pressing and holding the Home button brings up the task manager
  • Pressing and holding the jog dial brings up a list of apps
  • Pressing the power button brings up the quicklist
  • Hold down message key to turn off backlight on screen.
  • Fn + B = Toggle Bluetooth
  • Press the V key for PAGE DOWN and the T key for PAGE UP.
  • Hold down any key while typing to get its "alternate" character. i.e. Hold down the Q for a moment and you'll get the + symbol. This is nice if you don't like hitting Caps/Shift Q to get it.
  • if you are reading an email, press the center d-pad "action" button... it will take you to the new contact entry with that persons email address already filled in.
  • Apparently the phone doesn't support automatic keylock, you have to hold down the "end call" key for 3-4 seconds and it locks the phone.
  • When you have a URL in the address bar hold down the BACK button above the red hang up button and it will delete the entire URL.
  • In any of the edit fields (contacts, I.E., and others) if you hold down Undo (top right U-Turn with an arrow) it will delete the contents of the field you are in.
  • There is no way to get periodic reminder tones for missed calls or messages. This little app addresses that deficiency.
  • Holding down the back button on the right hand edge of the device launches the Camera app for taking pictures.

If you want to sync data between the phone and the computer, you can use ActiveSync on Windows XP, or Windows Mobile Device Center on Windows Vista. WMDC replaces ActiveSync, but is still in Beta 3 as of right now.

You'll probably want a few apps on your phone. Remember this is Windows Mobile 5.0, not PocketPC, so be sure to pick the right version of the app. I highly recommend starting with a freeware registry editor such as PHM Registry Editor. There are a lot of cool settings that are only exposed through the phone's registry*. I installed "regedit.Stngr_ARM.CAB" on the blackjack and it worked fine for basic registry editing. Once of the first things you'll want to do is turn off the "application lock", either via editing the registry or by downloading and running a small registry edit file named "appunlock.cab" on your phone.

Battery life is OK, but not great. That's probably why it comes with an extra battery and a standalone battery charger out of the box. The phone does trickle charge over USB when it's connected, however, I couldn't get it to charge at all via USB when the battery was very low and the phone wouldn't turn on. There are pictures of the extended battery in action here. This might be a good upgrade if you're running into battery issues.

The phone has a lot in common with the Motorola Q, so often tweaks and files for the Q will work on the Blackjack. You can download new start page designs that work fine from koodezine and qusers. Here's the one I'm using:

And remember, the phone accepts MicroSD cards for additional storage-- they're tiny compared to their SD and MiniSD brethren.

* that's right, there's a Windows Registry on a phone. Depressing but true.

Nice collection and saved me some time going through the thread. Was wondering if you have found some addition Blackjack resources and user groups that you could list in a nice summary as well as a detail step by step on how to create a shortcut to turn off the 3G and save the battery.

Any word if there is some sort of Network Snoop mode where you can see statistics, cell sites etc on the device ?

# re: Samsung Blackjack tips and tricks

Here is a super-handy tip...

You can get into the admin settings etc with the following code:
*#1546792*#
Menu:
1 Version
2 Preconfiguration
3 Network and Call settings
4 Internal

Two of the menus require a password, it is *#812308#

Handy as the Network and Call settings menu enables you to force it off 3G if you should so choose..

This is great. Thanks much. One note you might make in the bit about the hard reset--you have to do this when the phone is off. The user's manual doesn't mention that, but I found it on some other site. But this list of tips is excellent--it's going on my blackjack now!

Is there a way to add a greeting to the phone when people call you? I want them to hear my name when they call me prior to me picking up the call. This way if a person misdials they will know before I answer and reduce the number of wrong phone number calls I have to deal with.

Greg: That is a feature, if available, of your cell network provider. Cingular offers it (at a price), called Answer Tones. (I don't know about others.) I don't know if they have custom messages, or just music clips.

# re: Samsung Blackjack tips and tricks

I have been trying to dial internationally on my phone. I had been doing this for years on my Razr phone. I found out you cannot dial unless you download a patch from Samsungwireless.com. It has been very difficult to do. Has anyone had a similar experience. My phone is now at Samsung so they can fix the problem. Cingular promotes as a world phone and they did not know about the problem as well. Samsung is not going to offer the phone with the patch in the future, so if you are an international traveler, be patient. Also, Palm Treo has the same problem.

# found the answer! heres how to put a home screen on

To install a homescreen to your Blackjack, follow the steps detailed below.

1) Download the relevant homescreen .zip file to your desktop.
2) Unzip the files from the .zip file (this will consist of a couple of files)
3) Connect your Blackjack to your computer via the USB cable
4) Click on "Explore" on the activesync window
5) Select My windows Mobile-based Device, Application data, Home
6) Take the files that you previously unzipped and place them in the Home folder.

Selecting the Homescreen on your Blackjack

To select the Homescreen you have just installed on your Blackjack, simply follow these steps -

1) On your Blackjack, click "Start".
2) Select the "Settings" folder
3) Select "Home Screen" (D)
4) Under Home Screen Layout, select the homescreen you just uploaded
5) Under Color Scheme, select "default"
6) Under background image, select "default"
7) Select "Done" 3 or 4 times and then go back to the homescreen on your Blackjack and you will see your selected homescreen is displayed.

Nice set of tips. Has anyone been able to find what the mappings of the keys are that Microsoft Voice Command uses (App1-App6)? I'd like to be able to remap the side "back" button to be the voice command activate button since I never use that button for the back function. From my experimentation, that button doesn't seem to map to any of App1-App6 in VC.

# SD Card Causes BJ Freeze

So I have two issues I am working on--Please help...
1. My BJ has been freezing up. The screen goes black and all is locked. This would happen when i sync. The solution I had before was to hard reset. This had it's own issues (see point 2) What I finally figured out the freeze was caused by my SD card. Pulling the card solved the issue (w/o a reset) How do I fix this.
2. Hard resets are a fact of life with any smartphone. Is there a way to save all my settings. When I hard reset I lose every setting. (ringtones, email settings, etc) It's a hassle. Palm TREOs would be back to the exact same after a sync (which is good cause they always break!) Can't this be done with Windows Mobile. The lads in Redmond couldn't have missed this could they?

# Ring tone!!!

Help! Do you know how to silence a ringtone? I know how to do it with a call, but when I get or send a msg I can't find a way to silence the tone and it just keeps on playing loudly for everyone to hear! Also, My tones keep overlapping making a distorted noise if a phone call and msg are coming in at once. Sometimes, if I am actually on a call and another call or msg comes in too, the ring tone plays over my call so I can't hear the other person until it's done playing. Is there anything I cando for these problems? Please help me it's driving me crazy!!!!

# re: Samsung Blackjack tips and tricks

There is no actual way to make the picture bigger when you receive or make calls, atleast from what I understand. But you can use the program PhotoContacts it works very well and theres a demo version you can try out and see if you like it before you purchase it. It works very well and the picture takes up half the screen and the persons name and number takes up the other. You can download this at www.pocketx.net

# re: Samsung Blackjack tips and tricks

In order to set your phone to vibrate and ring at the same time go to Settings >>> Profiles >>> chose a profile then click Menu >>> Edit. There you can change ring type to Vibrate and ring.. then on Ring Volume change it to Loud. Also sometimes it may jus be the ringtones provided. If you want a free ringtone u can insert your own ringtone if u kno how to cut down songs to about 20-25 seconds and insert them into My Device >> Application Data >> Sounds... that way you can pick a song or tune as loud as you want it

I wonder if anyone else has tried this. I found this site, www.cometnow.com which has a download that allows you to send video from your BlackJack in real time. You can watch it on their website or on another Windows phone. Turns out that this company has been doing this for TV news stations for some time and just decided to beta a version for the public for free. Although it’s a small size video I thought it worked well and I loved the fact that I could show someone what I was seeing while I was seeing it.
