Haven't blogged in a while so I thought this would be a great way to start again.

Here's a tip to disable 2 annoying features in Word: Read layout and Shared Workspaces sidebar.

When you open a Word document from Sharepoint, 2 things typically happen:

  1. Your document opens up in Word in Read Layout mode.
  2. Your document loads, and then the Shared Workspaces sidebar opens.

If you like those 2 features, then forget about the rest of this post. Otherwise continue reading.

To disable the Read Layout mode, in Word, go to Tools, Options, General tab, then uncheck the Allow starting in Reading Layout.

To disable the Shared Workspaces sidebar from popping up when the document is loaded, go to Tools, Options, General tab, Service Options... button, Shared Workspaces, then uncheck the check boxes in Shared Workspace pane.

On a closing note, good luck to Sauren... err, I mean Dave, on his future endeavors!
